Former Green Bay Packers Player/Coach Johnny Blood’s Sailors’ Union of the Pacific card. A corresponding longshoreman certificate of discharge lists Blood’s discharge date as June 26, 1934, in San Francisco — just a little over a week before what became known as “Bloody Thursday” when longshoremen on strike battling over wages and hours clashed with police. The strike led to the unionization of West Coast ports. During the July 5, 1934, clash hundreds of residents and officers were injured and two people were shot — one died and the other wounded in the head.
