The Green Bay area was well represented at the 2026 WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament, producing two state champions, multiple medalists, and many state qualifiers across both the boys and girls divisions.
The headline performance for many came from Bay Port senior Alois Schlumpf, who captured the Division 1 state title at 132 pounds. After placing fourth as a freshman and sophomore and fifth as a junior, Schlumpf broke through in his final season, earning a 4-2 victory in the championship match.
“I just got a good warm up in and kept my mental game the same as I normally would for any other match, just calm.” Schlumpf said.
His opening match was tighter than he expected.
“The first match was a close one, a little to close for my liking,” he said. “Talking to my coaches and my parents they’re telling me it's not about how you win, it's if you win at that point. At the state tournament a win is a win.”
That mindset carried him through the semifinals and into the finals, where he trusted his preparation.
“I felt like I outworked everybody there. I stay after practice doing everything I can to just get that edge over my opponent. I just really believed that I was gonna win it even before I wrestled.”
Schlumpf called the title a lifelong goal.
“It's a huge accomplishment. It's what I set out to do for as long as I can remember,” he said. “I don't think I've fully wrapped my head around it yet.”
Seymour senior Cael Leisgang delivered another championship for the Green Bay area, dominating the 285 pound bracket to finish a perfect 41-0 season. Leisgang controlled the heavyweight bracket throughout the tournament and secured the Division 2 state title, capping off one of the most impressive seasons in the state.
After the win, he reflected on the moment in a post.
“Wow, dreams really do come true! I’d like to thank God, my coaches, my practice partners, and everyone who supported me along the way.”
The undefeated senior has committed to wrestle at the University of Wisconsin, where he will continue his career at the collegiate level.
Bay Port also saw sophomore Tucker Athey finish second at 175 pounds, while senior Luke Weyenberg qualified at 285. On the girls side, junior Dakotah Athey placed third at 120 pounds, senior Anna Behling took fifth at 126, and junior Autumn King finished fourth at 235. Freshman Ellie Hultman also qualified at 100 in the girls bracket.
De Pere junior Olin Neuville earned a third place medal at 157 pounds, while sophomore Ethan Flom qualified at 106. Pulaski had two fourth place finishers in junior Jack Falk at 113 and junior Wes Olson at 215. West De Pere junior Thomas Heraly also placed fourth at 126.
Green Bay Preble junior Maximus Davis qualified at 165, and Notre Dame Academy’s Mya Beckett qualified as a freshman in the girls division. Seymour junior Logan Boehnlein qualified at 126, while teammate Aidan Peters qualified at 144.
From state champions to first time qualifiers, the Green Bay area once again proved it has some of the best athletes in Wisconsin, bringing home many podium finishes and building momentum that stretches beyond the individual tournament.
Bay Port will have another opportunity to build on its success as the Pirates advanced to the Division 1 State Team Tournament. Bay Port is set to face Slinger in La Crosse on Friday, March 6. With several state medalists and qualifiers coming off strong performances in Madison, the Pirates bring both experience and momentum into the dual match format. The focus now shifts to a team goal as Bay Port looks to turn an already impressive postseason into something even bigger.
