Ashwaubenon evens conference record with big victory over Southwest

Victory comes on the heels of two consecutive shutout losses

GREEN BAY – Coming off a pair of lopsided Fox River Classic Conference (FRCC) shutout losses, the Ashwaubenon High School football team knew it needed to get back into the win column against Green Bay Southwest.

Behind three touchdowns from Isaac Dorn and a pair from Abel Schubring, the Jaguars (3-3 overall, 2-2 FRCC) turned back the Trojans (2-4, 0-4) on Sept. 25 at Southwest High School, 49-14.

With tough conference games still to come against De Pere and Bay Port, Ashwaubenon Coach Brian Ryczkowski said it was nice to win on Southwest’s homecoming night.

“It was certainly nice to get a win,” he said. “You can never underestimate how hard it is and how rewarding it is to win a high school football game. Being shut out in two games before this by West De Pere and Pulaski, it was also nice to finally get back into the end zone.”

Schubring took a pitch from an Ashwaubenon receiver on a hook-and-ladder play halfway through the first quarter for a score to put the Jags up 7-0 after Seneca Nooyen’s extra point.

Nicholas Nescavil hauled in a 17-yard TD pass from quarterback Brock Treichel early in the second quarter to make it a two-score game before the Trojans took advantage of an Ashwaubenon fumble at the six-yard line.

Traevaughn Weaver scored a few plays later to cut the deficit to 14-7 after Carsen Zeuske booted the extra point.

Punting on its next possession, Ashwaubenon was given a gift on a roughing-the-punter penalty to keep the drive alive.

Eight plays later, Logan Kozloski hauled in a 12-yard TD pass with less than a minute remaining before half.

Taking a 20-7 lead into intermission, Dorn and Schubring each scored third-quarter TDs to push the lead to 34-7.

Dorn added a pair of fourth-quarter TDs, while Weaver ended the scoring with a 59-yard TD run late in the game.

Isaac Aoki, Spencer Gezella and Landon Denny each had interceptions for the Jaguars, while Jackson Rhodes recovered a fumble.

Amari Collins had an interception, and DaeMar Timm recovered a fumble for Southwest.
