Faces of the Market
Susan Wall — Apple Lane Orchard

Susan Wall, who owns Apple Lane Orchard along with her father Wilbert Lewis and son Josh Wall, said apples were not the family’s first foray into farming.

“We started out as a dairy farm and retired from that approximately 30 years ago,” she said. “My father started the orchard and today we have over 3,000 trees. We also have two greenhouses producing tomatoes and many other vegetables.”

Wall said the name Apple Lane Orchard was inspired by her mother.

“My mother came up with the name because she loved driving through the orchards,” she said. “We have four different orchards with lanes going to and from. It’s beautiful when the trees are in bloom.”

Within those orchards, Wall said the family grows a wide assortment of apples, as well as other produce, which they offer at local farmers’ markets.

“We offer many varieties of apples including Honey Crisp, Bella, Macintosh, Cortlands, Wolf River, Galas, Honey Gold, Sweet 16 and many more,” she said. “We also have a wide variety of tomatoes and other vegetables. We set up at Broadway, Washington and Military Markets for the summer season and also the indoor market on Military for the winter season. We have been at the markets for over five years.”

Wall said she enjoys meeting and working with customers at the farmers’ markets.

“We work with the customers to fill their requests,” she said. “Working with the customers and meeting new people every week, we have made many friends over the years and enjoy talking with everyone.

In addition to growing and selling produce, the family-owned business has also recently opened its Pulaski orchard as a venue to host weddings May through October.
