SUAMICO – For the second consecutive week, the Bay Port High School football team recorded a statement win.
After thrashing Middleton 56-15 in Week 1, the Pirates (2-0) were at it again in nonconference action on Aug. 27 against perennial power Kimberly.
Bay Port scored a touchdown in each quarter to post a 28-13 victory over the Papermakers, who have begun the season by dropping their first two games.
Despite turning the ball over twice, the Pirates outgained Kimberly in total offense by a 424-232 margin.
“We wanted this win,” Bay Port Coach Steven Jorgensen said. “Our first goal of the season was to start 2-0 in nonconference play – now our next goal is to win a [Fox River Classic Conference] title. We left some points out there with some turnovers, but our defense played outstanding.”
After forcing a three-and-out on the Papermakers’ first possession, the Pirates wasted little time taking control.
Quarterback Braydon Maney called his own number from 18 yards out for a 7-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.
A Bay Port fumble at its own 10-yard line helped Kimberly tie the game near the end of the quarter.
Timmerman – who also made all four of his point-after attempts – plunged in from the one with less than four minutes showing on the clock before intermission to put the Pirates back up by a TD.
On the first play of the second half, Bay Port running back Jackson Smith burst through the line and bolted 74 yards for a score to make it 21-7.
Timmerman closed the scoring for the Pirates when he took a forward pitch on a jet sweep from quarterback Bray Babich for 19 yards and a score.
The Papermakers added a late TD with the game already sealed.
Bay Port rushed for a combined 232 yards on 35 attempts, led by Smith’s 80 yards.
Babich was 7 of 11 passing for 122 yards, while Maney added 70 yards through the air and 46 on the ground.
Receiver Jackson Otradovec hauled in seven receptions for 85 yards.
Bay Port’s Andrew Houle nabbed an interception.
The Pirates get into their FRCC schedule Sept. 4 when they host Pulaski.
