John Roake, 65, moved from Military Ave. to an apartment a block away from the heart of the Broadway district just so he could be a better volunteer.
His duties as a seasoned helper for the downtown group include anything and everything. Whatever needs to get done, he’s quick to do it.
For a Wednesday night Farmers Market, he can be found unloading and loading trailers for vendors or watching over their wares as they get set up.
He’ll be on hand from start to finish to assist in any way he can.
Roake, who has been recognized for his more than 2,000 hours of volunteerism , said he is currently on light duty due to an injury and has had to have surgery performed on his knee, his hip and his shoulder.
But he’s quick to add that the only thing broken about him is his “off button.”
