ASHWAUBENON – The Ashwaubenon Jaguars (3-4) went on the road to take on the West De Pere Phantoms (6-1) on Friday. Both teams were looking for a win on Breast Cancer awareness night, but it was the Phantoms who came out on top with a score of 47-13.

The Jaguars defense was playing strong, but could not hold West De Pere’s powerful offense from scoring. The Phantoms put up three scores in the first quarter. This, however, did not discourage the Jaguars. They kept fighting, making plays down the field on offense, and fighting back on defense. Running Back Gus Newel was a big contributor for the Jaguar’s offense. The game would go into halftime with a score of 41-6, West De Pere.

For the second half of the game, the Jaguars were able to hold West De Pere’s offense to one score. They talked about what they needed to change, and were able to execute. Not only did the defense hold them, but the offense was able to put up another score for Ashwaubenon. The Jaguars never gave up, and stayed focused in the game until the clock hit zero.

Despite the loss, Ashwaubenon’s Head Coach Brian Ryczkowski thought it was exciting to see his defense play a different style. “It was really exciting for the players to be able to blitz. It’s a fun aspect of defense. [West De Pere] had a good offense, and it was good to see some plays work.” Going into next week, Coach Ryczkowski wants his team to see that “football is a simple game. You block, you tackle. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, but there’s things to clean up.” He believes his team can play better, no matter who they're up against. He wants his team to worry about themselves and what they can do better, and put a better product on the board for next week's game against Green Bay Southwest.
