AVB Community Band presents ‘Moonlight Mischief’

Posted

The AVB Community Band invites the community to the second concert of its eight-concert 45th anniversary season with an evening of “Moonlight Mischief” on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m.

Doors to the Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center (PAC), 2391 S. Ridge Road in Ashwaubenon, open at 6 p.m.

The 75-member All-Volunteer Band (AVB), led by director Mike Ajango, has an evening of variety planned, all in keeping with the spirit and fun of the Halloween season.

The theme of the band’s hallmark 45th anniversary season is “Sapphire Fanfare & Jubilee.”

Perfect for family and friends of all ages, the AVB (All-Volunteer) Community Band’s October concert is co-sponsored by Nature’s Best Floral & Boutique and Exhaust Pros.

The band also thanks its many ongoing, sustaining AVB Community Band Donors who are recognized in each concert program, its advertisers and its audience members who support the band with their donations at each concert.

“Expect a harvest of tunes, a real variety in musical styles,” Ajango said of the October 19 concert. “You’ll enjoy some whimsy and playful selections, others that will tug at your emotions. And, of course, there will be some spooky fun in our music this evening.”

“We encourage our audience members to bring some friends and family members along with them to the concert,” Ajango said.

“With the season just beginning in September, this is a great time to introduce new fans to what a great evening of entertainment they can expect at an AVB Community Band concert. Let us know if you are bringing a group and we’ll also welcome you from the stage,” he said.

The associate director of the AVB Community Band is Paul Oleksy. Our concert narrator is Bruce Deadman.

“Moonlight Mischief” begins with an unlikely pairing of the spooky with “Psycho Prelude” from the movie Psycho and rollicking-good-fun with “The Muppets Theme.”

The fun continues with “Clowns! Clowns! Clowns!,” a concert band composition designed to evoke the lively, whimsical and off-beat atmosphere of the circus.

The music of John Williams is featured in “Chillers and Thrillers,” featuring some of his spookier compositions from the movies The Witches of Eastwick, Dracula, Jaws, War of the Worlds and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Next is Aram Khachaturian’s “Waltz from the Masquerade Suite,” which feels like a glamorous, sweeping 19th-century ballroom dance that’s also dark and dizzying.

The first half closes out with “Danse Bacchanale,” the instrumental dance movement from Act III of Camille Saint-Saëns’s 1877 grand opera “Samson et Dalila.”

The second half opens with the light-hearted calypso--styled “Under the Sea” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Composed by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Howard Ashman, the song won Best Original Song at the 1989 Academy Awards.

“The Forrest Gump Suite” from the movie Forrest Gump is a nostalgic piece that begins with the “Feather Theme.” Composed by Alan Silvestri, the gentle piano-and-string opening theme mirrors the floating feather from the movie’s beginning and conclusion.

Many composers have written music for the can-can dance. The most famous is French composer Jacques Offenbach’s “Can-Can,” which the band will perform in rousing fashion.

“Harlem Nocturne” is a memorable 1939 jazz standard, with music composed by Earle Hagen as a tribute to Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges. It features a moody, bluesy and melancholy melody designed to highlight the alto saxophone.

The concert closes with the “Pirates of the Caribbean (Curse of the Black Pearl),” which became the theme of the “Pirates” franchise of movies starring Johnny Depp as the iconic “Jack Sparrow.”
