Speedy Ashwaubenon skiers defy cold snap

CABLE – As the temperatures plummeted over the two-day stretch of Gitchi Gami Junior National Qualifier Nordic ski races January 19-20 at the Birkie Trailhead in Cable, Wisconsin, the Ashwaubenon Nordic Ski Team (ANST) raced through it all.

The ANST’s speediest skiers competed on both days in a field of collegiate and top junior skiers.

Jackson Adler (Green Bay East) raced consistently well, pulling out a fourth in the final heat of the Classic 1.3-kilometer sprint and a seventh in the 10 km classic distance with a time of 26 minutes and 39 seconds.

Daniel Huhtala (Ashwaubenon) and Ryan Thieme (Bay Port) made it to the junior A final after missing the cut in the overall qualifier.

In the distance race, Huhtala was 33rd with a time of 28:14 and Alex Lukens (Ashwaubenon) placed 71st with a 31:15.

In the U16 boys’ race, Ashwaubenon’s Mason Vinoski and Kevin Johnson made it through to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

On Sunday, Kevin Johnson was 15th in the U16 Classic 5 km and Grant Rocheleau (Bay Port) was 28th. Mason Vinoski and Sam Calaway (Ashwaubenon) took 33rd and 34th, respectively, while Joe Stumpf (Pulaski Middle School) crossed the line in 40th.

Kait Behm (Ashwaubenon) finished 74th in 41:20 in the women’s 10 km.
