Ashwaubenon school board approves new teacher stipends, banners

By Press Staff

ASHWAUBENON – After meeting in closed session Wednesday, Sept. 12, the Ashwaubenon school board agreed to provide stipends to offset the taxes for teachers who are awarded funds as part of the Golden Apple or Herb Kohl awards.

Ashwaubenon School District Superintendent Kurt Weyers said the stipends would allow the teachers to net the entire cash award by having the district provide additional funds to cover what they would otherwise have deducted because of taxes.

Board members also agreed to provide a $1,000 stipend to an AHS science teacher, Dan Albrent, for his efforts in the high school courtyard where he has spearheaded a project to build a new greenhouse funded by donations.

A longtime district employee who is a teacher at Pioneer Elementary School, Lori Roethlisberger, received board approval following the closed session to be grandfathered into the teacher retirement program.

Team banners

In response to the current board policy on student recognition for “outstanding accomplishment in the curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular areas,” the high school administration has modified the team recognition guideline in the co-curricular code.

Board members were informed about club teams and activity championships winning the highest level of competition at the state or national level that will now be recognized with banners on the east wall of the fieldhouse following modification of that guideline.

High School Principal Brian Nelsen noted four team recognition banners being added include: Global Champions, Destination Imagination, UnDIfined 2015; Girls Nordic Skiing, State Champions 2015 and 2016; Girls Bowling, State Champions 2001; and Boys Bowling, State Champions 2003 and 2016.

The past practice at AHS has included recognizing conference championships in WIAA athletics as well as WIAA and WACPC state runner-up and state championship teams with the year placed on the appropriate banner in the fieldhouse. Those banners will continue to be used along with some WIAA teams, such as the swimming teams, still being able to hang banners in additional locations.
