GREEN BAY – Over the last 15 to 20 years, the Port of Green Bay has established an annual custom, maintaining its “First Ship Contest” — a nautical guessing game.

“The whole point of the competition is to guess when the first cargo ship will arrive as it travels under the locally known Tower Drive Bridge (Leo Frigo Bridge),” Brown County Port and Resource Recovery Department Director Dean Haen stated.

The event has developed as a joint venture with the Discover Green Bay to enable estimates to be submitted online, increasing participation and involving locals in the busy nautical industry.

The first ship to sail under the Tower Drive Bridge (Leo Frigo Bridge), which marks the contest’s turning point, is anticipated by contestants.

The Discover Green Bay also highlights the connection between neighborhood companies and the port, demonstrating the city’s dedication to innovation.

“Reward packages for the best guesses include but not limited to, exhilarating boat journeys, leisurely resort stays, and other interesting outings. The Brown County Port Club wants to make the competition more than just a guessing game by praising and rewarding community participation. This is a chance for locals to unite, partake in the thrill, and commemorate Green Bay’s maritime legacy that links it to the global community,” Haen added.

Shipping season generally starts after March 15.
