GREEN BAY – On Thursday, Jan. 1, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Radio GBX celebrated its one-year anniversary and the return of campus radio.

Although UW-Green Bay has had a variety of radio stations since the 1970s, Radio GBX uses collaborative effort between faculty and students to stream music and news for their student body and beyond.

The return of Radio GBX was prompted by a need to expand opportunities for “hands-on, practical education” said Bryan Carr, advisor and general manager of the station.

“College radio in particular allows for freeform creative expression and experimentation, giving students the opportunity to put a ton of their own personality and taste into their on-air work while also training them how to write and speak effectively and manage the complexities of an on-air broadcast,” he added.

Students have taken advantage of the opportunities provided by the radio station.

“I joined because I needed an outlet,” said Sophia White, a junior at UW-Green Bay.

She runs “The Collective” at Radio GBX from 2-4 p.m. every Wednesday and is one of a handful of students with their own section at the station.

Seniors Hunter Chrisman and Marcus Moss have been co-hosting “The Midday Beat” from noon – 2 p.m. every Monday since March 2023.

Staff members also have their own shows in the works, with a news broadcast and sports show planned.

Students and staff have worked together to rebuild radio broadcasting at UW-Green Bay and establish it as an important group on campus.

“One thing that prompted me to be a part of Radio GBX was from the excitement that this was a new frontier in student-led media. I wanted to be a part of the team to be able to help the station expand and become a staple at UWGB and the community,” shared Valeria Tavarez, program director of Radio GBX. “Historically at UW-GB, the radio has been reinvented. I hope that Radio GBX sticks and is a station for many years to come.”

Radio GBX can be streamed live anytime via live365.com.
