GREEN BAY – On Jan. 13, the Brown County MLK Committee hosted the 29th annual MLK Celebration in partnership with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC).
This year’s theme was “Bridging Cultures, Celebrating Differences” which reflects on the “colorful fabric” of which every community is woven, said Miriam Brabham, co-chair of the Brown County MLK Committee.
The event was hosted online due to weather, but this didn’t stop the celebration — over 100 participants attended the event online.
The celebration included a competition for K-12 students to create an interpretation of this year’s theme, recognitions for teacher’s awards, an interpretive dance, a recitation of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech, among other events.
During the event, UW-Green Bay Vice Chancellor Dr. Dawn Crim gave some remarks during the event to expound on the “Bridging Culture, Celebrating Differences” theme, stating, “We strive for inclusivity. Inclusivity that sees values and celebrates our differences that connects our humanity. Inclusivity benefits everyone. If we follow that mentality, when we individually do better, it leads to everyone doing better.”
This annual celebration is not only a signature event in the community, but necessary said Brabham, who explained that even during tumultuous times, there is a need for celebration.
The annual MLK Celebration strives to promote Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through the cornerstones of Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream — justice, equality and harmony — are maintained through active participation in events like these, said Brabham.
