Feb. 4, 1938 – April 9, 2023

MADISON – Alan Roy Gruendemann, age 85, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023, at Agrace Hospice Care. He was born on Feb. 4, 1938, in Algoma, Wis., the son of Wilfred and Ruth (Fluck) Gruendemann.

Al graduated from Algoma High school in 1955 and immediately enlisted in the Air Force. After four years of service, he entered UW-Madison and, in 1969 received his degree in Business. Al spent his career working as an engineer for Oscar Mayer, retiring after 3 decades. On November 26, 2005, Al married Cindy (Curran) in Honolulu Hawaii.

Al was truly kind. He grew up during the depression and always put others before himself. He was a loyal member of Midvale Lutheran Church where he served as an usher for many years. Al was an avid collector and lifelong member of Red Wing Collectors Society. He was very handy and was always able to make old things work again. Al was a true Wisconsinite and a huge Badger fan. He watched sports and drove Cindy crazy by ceaselessly watching ‘Shoot em Ups’ (Westerns). He loved eating ice cream, drinking root beer and going to Friday fish fries. Al also loved traveling and, together with Cindy, visited numerous countries and states.

Al is survived by his wife, Cindy; son, Luke Gruendemann; daughter, Tracy Gruendemann; daughter-in-law, Kristin (Todd) Williams; son-in-law, David Jensen; sister, Carol Katz; sister-in-law, Kathleen Olson; and grandson, Justin Waddington. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marene Gruendemann; brother, Paul Gruendemann; and late wife, Joanne (LeCloux) Gruendemann.
A funeral service was held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, at 12 noon on Friday, April 14, 2023. A visitation was held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday. A catered lunch followed. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Algoma at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be gifted in Al’s name to Midvale Lutheran Church Hunger Fund, 4329 Tokay Blvd, Madison, WI 53711 or Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, 2802 Dairy Drive, Madison, WI 53718. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

My best friend… you will live on in my memories.
