Dylan Vandervest – The Next Generation in Band

Dylan Vandervest
Preble High School

Parents: Ryan and Lyndsay Vandervest

Area of Interest: Band

When did you first get involved in band?
In elementary school, we had a band class but there was no percussion. I really wanted to join the class, but I was really interested in playing percussion. Once I got to middle school, I immediately joined band and jazz band which helped me get to where I am today.

What instruments do you play?
I play the drums, guitar and bass. My favorite has been the drums since I was little and is what I grew up playing. I always looked up to my dad in the musical aspect especially and wanted to learn from him and gain the same skills as him.

What has been your favorite experience in band so far?
My favorite experience in band has been traveling to Disney with all of my closest friends in the music department, making awesome memories with them all. In December I marched down Main Street with the marching band (playing snare drum) and performed on the Waterfront Stage with the choir (playing drumset).

What’s something you hope to do/accomplish as a musician in the future?
In the future, I hope to continue involving music throughout my life and to have children and play music for them in hopes of passing on my passion for music.

What advice would you give to someone looking to get into band?
I would say go for it. You will only gain skill, friends, happiness, and many amazing memories. If I hadn’t joined band, I would be nowhere in comparison to where I am now.

What six words would you use to describe yourself?
Musician, motivated, organized, considerate, clever and practical.

Do you have any hidden talents?
Juggling.

What subject do you enjoy most in school?
Anatomy has been my favorite class so far this year because I enjoy learning about the structure and functionality of human and animal bodies.

Where do you hope to travel one day?
I hope to travel along Route 66 to see the remains of the United States’ iconic highway and how traveling and automobiles have developed over time.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
To be yourself and don’t change just to be like anyone else.

Who is your role model?
My greatest role model is my grandpa Al. He has always been a role model to me and I have always looked up to him. He is extremely knowledgeable with just about everything in life and is my go-to pun-telling buddy.

What plans do you have for after you’ve finished school?
After high school, I will be studying radiology at NWTC and hope to play gigs with my rock band Swap Meet which I started in late 2021.

If you could switch lives with anyone for a day, who would you choose?
I would switch lives with Dave Grohl and go on tour with the Foo Fighters. I would love to be on a big stage performing with one of the greatest bands of all time.

Are you a Green Bay Packers fan?
Yes.
