The Next Generation of Musicians: Charlie Brault

Charlie Brault
Green Bay West High School

Parent: Kelly Brault
Area of Interest: Band

When did you first get involved in band? What got you interested?
I first got involved in band in 5th grade, but I’ve always been interested in music thanks to my dad.

What instrument do you play?
B-flat Clarinet.

What has been your favorite experience in band so far?
Pep band my freshman year! It was a new experience, but it felt really rewarding to be able to play with the “big kids.” I felt like I was going places, but being Drum Major has been really rewarding because I’ve been able to see how West has improved after many different hurdles.

What’s something you hope to do/accomplish as a musician in the future?
I want to compose a piece of music that other schools play one day.

What advice would you give to someone looking to get into band?
Don’t wait, do it now! The hardest part is starting.

What six words would you use to describe yourself?
Determined, tough, creative, friendly, thoughtful and open-minded.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I’m a huge dinosaur nerd.

What subject do you enjoy most in school?
Biology! I want to work with animals some day, and I’ve had a lot of pets over the years. I was always a science kid.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?
The sound of people chewing.

Where do you hope to travel one day?
The Netherlands or Spain! I’ve been learning Spanish and the majority of my DNA tracing is Dutch.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
If you can’t beat the fear, do it afraid.

Who is your role model?
My band teacher, Mrs. Scherer. She’s very patient and understanding and has helped me through so many circumstances where the only option was to keep going.

What plans do you have for after you’ve finished school?
4-year university. I’m thinking Colorado State or Marquette in Milwaukee. I want to study zoology.

If you could switch lives with anyone for a day, who would you choose?
I wouldn’t, in all honesty. I only have one life and I want to live it to the fullest without comparison.

Do you have any pets?
Thunder (French mastiff) and Posey (tuxedo cat).

What’s one skill you think everyone should have?
Practicing empathy is an extremely important skill, especially if you want to work in social services or have deep and meaningful connections.

Are you a Green Bay Packers fan?
I don’t watch football on TV, but I like playing in the marching band for West.
