Mayor says city on the right track for future

GREEN BAY – Speaking to dozens who gathered at the Bay Beach Amusement Park’s Main Pavilion July 28 for his second State of the City address since being elected in 2019, Mayor Eric Genrich acknowledged challenges the city has faced in the past and identified opportunities for the future.

Genrich spoke about difficulties Green Bay and its citizens have faced in recent years amid global economic instability and health concerns.

He also highlighted our community’s sense of resiliency and what looks like a bright future ahead for the city of Green Bay.

“Citizens are justifiably upset by the way our lives have been upended in recent years,” Mayor Genrich said. “I think we’re all searching for that sense of normalcy that seems unreachable at times. And yet, there are real reasons for hope. Those reasons are myriad, they’re varied. But they’re all rooted in the character of this community’s citizenry, which is optimistic, resilient and imbued with a drive towards cooperation and social solidarity.”

Among the redevelopment hopes Genrich highlighted in the 45-minute speech was an Amtrak passenger rail hub at the site of the coal piles on the west shore of the Fox River just south of the Mason Street Bridge.

Genrich also highlighted the city’s unfolding clean energy plan; a federal grant to fund a city Conservation Corps; a large investment by dog food company Carnivore Meats; development at the East Town Mall and hopes for future cruise ship dockings to go from two ships this year to a dozen in the future.
