GREEN BAY – The Joseph Project, a four-day intensive job employment training course created by Sen. Ron Johnson at the Micah Center graduated 11 participants recently. 

St. John’s case manager Eugene Smalls said 10 of the 11 graduates already received job offers, and are on a path to self-sufficiency.

Steffen suspends efforts on ending Stadium District

BROWN COUNTY – State Rep. David Steffen has suspended his legislation calling for the dissolution of the Lambeau Field Stadium District after what he described as a positive meeting with Stadium District Chair Chuck Lamine and Executive Director Pat Webb.

According to a release from Steffen’s office, an agreement was reached on a “positive path forward regarding the core concerns” addressed in the draft legislation.

“It was agreed upon by the parties that an appropriate, necessary action would be for the Stadium District to expand and enhance the transparency and financial oversight procedures relating to taxpayer-funded Lambeau Field expenses,” the release stated.

Steffen said further steps relating to the “long-term future and financial relationship with the stadium will now be up to the community and its local leaders.”

Memorial brick deadline soon

BROWN COUNTY – The deadline to purchase memorial bricks for the Brown County Veteran Memorial for 2022 is fast approaching.

Those interested in purchasing a brick have until March 15 to do so.

More than 4,000 tribute bricks are currently in place in and around the memorial outside the Resch Expo.

Community engagement sessions

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay School District will host two community engagement sessions for parents, staff, students and community members to share their vision for Green Bay Area Public Schools.

The sessions will be held:

• 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at West High School, Library Media Center, 966 Shawano Avenue

• 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 at Edison Middle School commons, 442 Alpine Drive

Face coverings will be required, unless the School Board’s criteria regarding the removal of face coverings has been met. 

Translators will be available for Spanish, Hmong, and Somali for all sessions. An American Sign Language interpreter will also be available. 

The district has retained ATSR Planners, Architects and Engineers to study facilities and with stakeholder input develop long-term recommendations – regarding mechanical systems, instructional learning spaces, enrollment and capacities, transportation, safety and security, technology and future programming needs – to present to the board.

Swinging for CP ice golf event

WISCONSIN – The 4th Annual Swinging for CP ice golf outing is set for Saturday, Feb. 19, at Boom Bay Bar & Grill on Lake Poygan in Larsen.

The fee to participate is $25 per person and includes nine holes of ice golf in Boom Bay, with all proceeds directly benefiting CP.

Organizers said this year’s fundraising goal is $20,000.

The event will feature food and drink specials, live entertainment from Music by Mike and raffles with winners announced throughout the day.

Food system virtual workshops

WISCONSIN – The University of Wisconsin Division of Extension Community Food Systems Program will provide a no-cost virtual workshop for food entrepreneurs from 10-11:15 a.m. every Monday from March 7-April 4.

Organizers said the series is designed to connect entrepreneurs with food business owners to share tips, resources and examples of food business innovations from across Wisconsin.

All workshops are free to the public and will be hosted on Zoom.

Ledgeview selected as Tree City

LEDGEVIEW – The Town of Ledgeview was selected by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA.

The program aims to highlight the importance of an urban tree canopy and the improved care of vital city trees. 

It also gives municipalities an avenue to celebrate their work by showing residents, visitors and the entire country that they’re committed to environmental change.

Stephanie Schlag, Parks, Recreation and Forestry director, said Ledgeview is honored to be selected.

10th consecutive service award

DE PERE – For the 10th consecutive year, Mercury Marine awarded Mr. Outboard’s Watersports Marine of De Pere its Service Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Award for 2021.

As one of just 256 of the more than 5,000 North American dealers who qualified for the Service CSI Award for 2021, Mr. Outboard’s Watersports Marine ranks in the top 1% of all Mercury dealers, and is one of just 31 dealerships in the country to receive this award 10 or more consecutive years.

To be eligible for the Service CSI Award, a dealer must maintain a score of 94 or better out of 100 in customer satisfaction surveys.

Annual First Ship contest

GREEN BAY – The annual First Ship Contest, sponsored by Discover Green Bay, is underway, taking guesses from the public on the date and time the first ship sails into the Port of Green Bay.

The person whose guess comes closest to the date and time of the arrival of the first ship wins a prize package.

Port Director Dean Haen said Mother Nature plays a significant role in determining when ship traffic will resume.

The start dates of the shipping seasons in recent years include:

• 2021: March 19

• 2020: March 15

• 2019: April 5

• 2018: March 26

• 2017: March 21

One entry is allowed per person.

DNR urges snowmobiling safety

WISCONSIN – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging the public to be safe while out on the snowmobiling trails, following a deadly weekend.

Officials said since the start of the new year, there have been 10 snowmobile fatalities.

There were 13 fatalities in 2021.

Lt. Martin Stone, DNR off-highway vehicle administrator, said the overall leading causes of snowmobile fatalities are alcohol, excess speed, driver inexperience and operator error.

“Conditions can change, and what was at first a smooth trail could be hazardous by the end of the day,” Stone said. “Take your time and slow down, especially at night.”

Winter fun and fitness

DE PERE – Kindergarteners at Heritage Elementary School in De Pere learned all about snowshoeing from Fallen Timbers staff Feb. 11 in an effort to introduce lifelong hobbies to the school’s littlest learners.

The youngsters then got to test out their skills in the snow around the school.

ESSER III funds feedback

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay District anticipates receiving approximately $44 million in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) III funding as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.

Prior to submitting the district’s final ESSER III plan to the Department of Public Instruction in March, the district is looking to staff, parents and community members for feedback.

Funds must be spent by Sept. 30, 2024 for the purpose of addressing the impact of the pandemic on students.

The district is asking stakeholders to watch a brief informational video and complete a short questionnaire on how the funds should be spent.

All responses are due by 4 p.m. Feb. 25 through the district’s website.

Trivia Bee for Literacy Green Bay

GREEN BAY – The second annual Trivia Bee Event to benefit Literacy Green Bay is set for Thursday, Feb. 24.

The virtual event will feature three rapid-fire rounds of trivia, a student presentation and silent auction baskets to bid on.

Event organizers said the goal is to raise $35,000.

Individual tickets ($25 each) are now available for purchase online at EventBrite.

Proceeds from the event go toward helping Literacy Green Bay continue its mission of helping adults and families acquire the reading, writing, math, English language, computer and workforce skills they need to function effectively as workers and community members.

GRACE superintendent

GREEN BAY – GRACE (Green Bay Area Catholic Education) announced the hiring of Drew Mulloy as GRACE Superintendent.

GRACE President Kimberly Desotell said the newly-created leadership position will assist with positioning GRACE for further growth, as well as elevate areas of curriculum, communications, student services and technology integration.

Mulloy, who currently serves as the principal at St. John the Baptist School in Howard, will begin his new role July 1.

A search for Mulloy’s replacement is already underway.

He was also recently named a “Future 15” recipient by Current Young Professionals.

Gardening webinar series

BROWN COUNTY – Extension Brown County will host a free webinar series for new gardeners starting Feb. 22.

Registration is now open for the three-part series, “Let’s Get Growing: A Winter Lunch & Learn Gardening Series,” which includes:

• Feb. 22 – Part 1: Creating a plant map for your garden. This class will cover essential elements for mapping and planting a garden, including crop rotation.

• March 8 – Part 2: Indoor seed starting basics. Participants will learn the basics of starting seeds indoors in the winter.

• March 22 – Part 3: Simple steps to composting. This class focuses on the benefits of compost, including tips for adding compost to traditional, community or container gardens.

All webinars begin at noon.

Wireless Hotspot donations

GREEN BAY – UScellular donated 10 wireless hotspots and two years of service to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Green Bay as part of its After School Access Project.

In 2021, UScellular donated 2,800 hotspots and service to 33 Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, a $2.6 million investment.

The company has pledged to donate up to $13 million in hotspots and service to help up to 50,000 youth connect to reliable internet in its markets.

‘HerStory’ exhibit open at Neville

GREEN BAY – The “HerStory” exhibit at The Neville Public Museum is now open.

The temporary exhibit explores the changing roles and experiences of women in work, politics and their community through photographs, stories and artifacts.

Seventeen contemporary women were interviewed, their stories recorded and personal artifacts loaned for this exhibition, while 15 additional female stories and artifacts demonstrate change within the time from 1900 to present.

The exhibit runs through Nov. 6.

SNC lecture series

DE PERE – St. Norbert College’s Center (SNC) for Global Engagement (CGE) continues its annual Great Decisions Lecture Series 6:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 23

Lectures are presented virtually on Zoom from 6:30-7:30 p.m. every other Wednesday through April 20.

The lecture series focuses on critical global issues selected by the Foreign Policy Association that serves as a point of departure for dialogue and debate.

The lecture series is free and open to the public.
