Area wrestlers advance to state tournament

ASHWAUBENON – Several area wrestlers won sectional titles Feb. 22 at the WIAA Division 1 Ashwaubenon Sectional.

Only the first- and second-place finishers advanced to the 77th Annual WIAA Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament Feb. 27-29 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

De Pere’s Shane Corrigan (106 pounds, 42-1 overall) and Michael Anderson (160, 36-6), Bay Port’s Jacob Ward (138, 34-4) and Drake Anderson (195, 38-6) and Ashwaubenon’s Noah Leisgang (145, 36-4) and Connor Ramage (170, 39-1) all won sectional titles.

Second-place finishers also advancing to state were West De Pere’s Trent Francois (120, 33-5), Ashwaubenon’s Cody Minor (132, 36-3) and Nathan Moynihan (220, 38-3), De Pere’s Andrew Lopez (138, 40-4) and Sam Bruss (145, 37-8), Pulaski’s Mason Wells (195, 24-10) and Bay Port’s Max Meeuwsen (285, 42-1).

Meeuwsen, the defending state champ in the 285-pound division, lost to No. 2-ranked Cullen Quick (46-0) from Menasha in the finals, 7-1.

Third-place finishers were West De Pere’s Jake Hendricks (126) and Quinton Schuyler Jr. (182), Pulaski’s Mitchell Kitzman (145), Bay Port’s Chandler Stordeur (152) and Trevor Nys (170) and De Pere’s Kyjuan Vengrowsky (220).

Kaukauna won the team competition with its 181.5 points.

Locally, Bay Port (second, 109.5), De Pere (third, 91), Ashwaubenon (fourth, 77.5), West De Pere (eighth, 38), Pulaski (ninth, 35), Green Bay Preble (13th, 8) and Green Bay United (16th, 0) also competed in the 16-team sectional.
