WPS granted exception to rooftop screening requirement

By Press Times Staff

ASHWAUBENON – Plans from Wisconsin Public Service for additional heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment and duct work, to replace some existing rooftop units as well as some existing units installed in the interior of WPS’s service garage at 2850 S. Ashland Ave., are being given an exception from a village requirement for the rooftop equipment to be screened from view.

Last December, the Site Plan Review Committee approved WPS’s request to install the additional HVAC equipment and duct work on the condition the company conduct a structural analysis of the building to determine if it can support the screening, and if not, provide the committee documentation to determine whether to grant an exception to the requirement.

Representatives from WPS appeared before the committee and questioned the need for the screening and whether that could even work, given the possible wind load on top of the roof.

Community Development Director Aaron Schuette said the committee approved an exception Tuesday, Feb. 4, because the structural analysis indicated the building with the proposed screen wall could not support the additional loads with the snow, screen weight and wind load.
