Name: Cody Minor

Parents:  Jenni and Travis Minor

Activity:  Wrestling

Nickname: Cuddles

Cody Minor is a senior on the Ashwaubenon wrestling team.

He recently signed a scholarship to wrestle at St. Cloud St. in Minnesota.

As a junior, he won the WIAA Division 1 state title in the 113-pound classification.

What’s it like to be a leader on the wrestling team at Ashwaubenon?

“It’s easy to lead when the entire team is doing what’s asked. We work hard every day and have fun doing it.”

What’s your most embarrassing wrestling moment?

“Any time I get beat by assistant coach Chase DeCleene.”

Most memorable?

“Winning a state title. I trained as hard as I could all year getting ready for state. To accomplish it made each sacrifice worth it.”

Talk about your accomplishments.

“Improving my work ethic and getting better in high school. The accomplishments came with it – from winning my first tournament to getting 100 wins and finishing off my junior year with a state title.”

How many years have you been wrestling?

“A couple of my teammates got me started in the first grade. I’m still wrestling with them now.”

What’s the hardest part about performing in a match?

“Maintaining your weight and eating healthy so you feel good in matches. It’s a struggle to make weight. Right after, it’s easy to eat junk food. I always need to be sure I put healthy food in my body.”

Which teammate would you like to be with if you were lost at sea?

“Damien (chu-chu) is going into the Navy so having him while lost at sea would help.”

If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be?

“MMA fighter Conor McGregor. He’s one of the best fighters and has one of the biggest fan bases.”

What’s your routine before a match?

“I have the same warmup for every match or competition. Routine is the most important thing. I start with some jogging, some drilling and finish with spirits and stretching.”

What are your hobbies in the offseason?

“Swimming, fishing, hunting and relaxing at my cabin.”

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

“I dislike spicy foods.”

Talk about how you start with moves in middle school and how it progresses into high school.

“In middle school, the goal was to get better every week. The biggest difference in high school has been repetition – doing the same thing over and over until it’s perfected.”

Chicago or Los Angeles?

“Los Angeles because it’s warmer, and I have never been there.”

What would your dream job be once you graduate?

“Coach wrestling when I’m way older.”

Talk about head coach Jody VanLaanen.

“He brings energy into the room, which is contagious. He gets us ready to go each day and makes going to practice lots of fun.”

What’s your favorite type of music?

“Country.”

Wrestling in Madison Square Garden in New York City or the Superdome in New Orleans?

“Madison Square Garden seems like a better atmosphere for wrestling.”

What’s your favorite trip ever taken?

“I used to travel to Florida when I was younger.”

In 10 years when you reflect, how do you want to be remembered at Ashwaubenon?

“As the kid who always did what was expected of him, a student who worked hard in the classroom and as a wrestler and as one of the best wrestlers to come through Ashwaubenon.”
