Local cross country runners compete at state

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Several area teams and individuals took part in the WIAA Division 1 Cross Country State Championship meet in Wisconsin Rapids Nov. 2.

The 3.1-mile race took place at the Ridges Golf Course.

One-hundred-ninety boys ran, while 189 girls competed.

The top-five placings for each team added up to the team total.

For the second straight season, the De Pere boys’ and girls’ teams both participated.

For the boys, Andrew Lopez raced to a 10th-place finish in 16:17.

The Redbirds placed 10th as a team with 258 points.

Aisa Longnecker paced the girls with a ninth-place showing in 18:43.

De Pere finished 15th with 340 points.

The Green Bay Preble boys, who finished ninth as a team with 243 points, were led by Joseph Engler’s 19th-place run in 16:28.5.

Individually for the boys, Ashwaubenon’s Nick Johnson (43rd – 16:37) and Bay Port’s Andrew Aderhold (138th – 17:33.9) also competed.

Individual girls included Green Bay Southwest’s Kaylee Kornowski (60th – 19:50.4), Ashwaubenon’s Erica Conrad (67th – 19:57.1) and Bay Port’s Lindsay Herber (89th – 20:08).

Jake Krause from Hortonville won the boys’ state championship in 15:34.2.

Onalaska’s Kora Malecek was victorious for the girls in 17:44.6.

Preble boys’ results: 19, Joseph Engler, 16:28.5; 35, Brett Litkey, 16:45.2; 47, Josh Helgeson, 16:59.5; 60, Khalid Mohamed, 17:09.1; 82, Syncere Jones, 17:22.8; 116, Frank Haanen, 18:02.3; 120, Aaron Paris, 18:06.9.

Notre Dame competes: In Division 2, the Notre Dame Academy boys’ team finished runner-up behind Valders.

Reid Milton led the Tritons with an eighth-place run in 16:48.6

Molly Desotell competed individually in the girls’ race and finished third in 18:57, 38 seconds behind Southwestern’s Kayci Martensen, who won the race overall.
