GREEN BAY – The 5 inches of rain which fell in Green Bay Sept. 10 made for sloppy conditions for area high school cross country runners at Colburn Park two days later.

Thirteen teams competed in the 21st Annual Trojan 5k Invitational in cool and windy conditions.

Kimberly’s Nolan Richey won the varsity boys’ race with a time of 16:46.45, while De Pere’s Aisa Longnecker was victorious for the girls in 19:53.31.

“We’re only two races in, but this is a good indicator it will be a good season,” Longnecker said. “We have a strong team, and we have very good coaches who know how to train us – especially on hills and on finishing. I think the key to longevity over the course of the season is variety in training – not over-training but finding a balance between long runs and workout runs is going to pay off. Coach [James Boyd] keeps us on track.”

Kimberly, Appleton North and Freedom were the top three boys’ teams, with Pulaski finishing fourth.

For the girls, Appleton North, Kimberly and De Pere finished first, second and third, respectively.

“We’ve been doing great so far this year,” said Southwest head coach Justin Short. “The girls ran great today. Kaylee Kornowski and Greta Hansen both ran fantastic races. For the guys, we’re so happy Ben Fredeen is back with us this year after not coming out his junior year – he ran phenomenal. He won our first race of the season as well. I’m really proud of all of the guys.”
