Fifth year of Ashwaubenon Blast a success

ASHWAUBENON – Face painting, carnival games, cheese curds, a beer tent, live music, bounce houses, free swimming, corn-on-the-cob, a car show – you name it, this year’s Ashwaubenon Blast had it.

Now in its fifth year, the event on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Ashwaubomay Park in Ashwaubenon, had a little something for everyone.

As in years past, the event was sponsored by the Ashwaubenon Alumni Association in partnership with the Village of Ashwaubenon and the Ashwaubenon School District.

A showcase of cars kicked off the weather-perfect day.

Car collectors and enthusiasts alike got a chance to peruse through dozens of beauties – both sporty and vintage – including a 1941 fire truck on display to raise money for the Ashwaubenon Historical Society Museum.

Folks of all ages were on their feet and singing along throughout the day, jamming out to the sounds of Third Degree, Doo Wop Daddies and The Cougars.

And don’t forget the kiddos.

The self-dubbed “family fun-ath-alon event” offered carnival games, face painting, balloon animals, bounce houses, free swimming at Ashwaubomay Lake, a rock climbing wall and prizes for the tiny attendees.

The best part – the $5 unlimited wristband allowed kids to do as many things as they’d like, as many times as they wanted to.

Let’s just say it was a big hit.

Howard resident Jenny Yang said her family came out for the event because it gave them a chance to spend time together in a fun, relaxing atmosphere.

“My kids wished it lasted longer in the day,” Yang said. “The event was adorable.”

Like in past year, many graduating classes from Ashwaubenon High School used the event as a place to meet up and reminisce about the good old days.

“The class of 1979 had our 40th reunion during the Blast,” said Gerald Kruse, of Green Bay. “I’ve been coming for three years and love it. Meet people I haven’t seen in years.”

What started five years ago as a way to celebrate 50 years of the Ashwaubenon School District has turned into one of the area’s can’t-miss summer events.

“Fun for the whole family – I wouldn’t miss it,” Kruse said.
