GREEN BAY—Will Destiche hit a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth to send home Jett Thielke and give the Bay Port Pirates a dramatic 3-2 victory over Manitowoc Post 88 in an opening round legion game played July 19 at Southwest High School.

“I just wanted to make sure I made good contact with the pitch,” said Destiche about his game winning RBI. “Jett had gotten a hit in front of me. We didn’t want the game to continue to go on. I knew I had one chance to end it.”

Thielke pitched six innings for the Pirates giving up 7 hits and 2 runs.

Carter Highline threw the final two innings going 1-2-3 in each of them.

Noah Jacquart took the loss for Manitowoc going eight innings giving up three runs and six hits.

“Jett gave us strong pitching throughout the game,” said Jesse Wiltzius, Bay Port head coach. “They (Manitowoc) have been very solid all summer and can get on a roll with their bats. Carter came in and finished it off.”

Adam Bernklau got the Pirates off to a great start with a lead-off single.

With one out, Andrew Slaasted stepped in.

As Bernklau was attempting a steal to second, Manitowoc’s catcher Jacob DeBruin overthrew second base and Bernklau came home to give the Pirates an early 1-0 lead.

Good pitching ensued for the next three innings as neither starter gave up a run.

In the top of the fifth, Manitowoc got on the board.

William Maples took first base on an error by the Pirates.

DeBruin doubled bringing Maples home to even the game at one apiece.

Trent Van Ess then connected on a double himself to score DeBruin and give Manitowoc a 2-1 lead through five innings.

More damage might have occurred had it not been for center fielder Bryce DeBouche.

With runners on second and third, Noah Brotski hit a booming shot deep to the fence.

DeBouche made a lunging catch on the run to get the final out for the Pirates and preserve two potential runs.

“He’s been lights out for me all summer,” added Wiltzius. “It’s those plays on defense that we love to see as coaches.”

The Pirates answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth after Alex Delebreau scored to tie the game at two.

The Pirates had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh but with one out a line out and subsequent touch of second base resulted in a double play and extra innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, Bay Port ended it.

With two outs, Thielke doubled to center setting up the winning hit by Destiche.

“Just a great team victory for us in postseason,” said Wiltzius. “We have to continue this play into the weekend.”
