Senior Spotlight: Jake Karchinski – West De Pere basketball, football

Jake Karchinski starred in both basketball and football during his high school career at West De Pere.

Karchinski led the football team to a 13-1 record and a trip to the WIAA Division 3 state finals.

Many times, he was an unstoppable force, garnering double and triple teams.

In his final season, he had 55 tackles (16 of them were for losses), 7.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries.

In his presence, the defense recorded three shutouts and held their opponents to a touchdown or less in eight contests.

He will be taking his football talents to the University of Iowa to play for the Hawkeyes next fall.

Not to be outdone was Jake’s success on the hardwood.

He averaged over 17 points a game in leading the Phantoms to the regional finals and a 14-10 mark.

He eclipsed the 20-point mark in eight contests and had nine double-doubles.

What was it like to be a leader on the football team at West De Pere High School?
“I loved it. It was cool being influential to my boys.”

What was your most embarrassing moment ever in football? 

“My sophomore year I walked on to the field in my normal shoes instead of my cleats.”

How many years have you been involved in football?

“I have played since third grade.”

What was your most memorable moment?

“My first start versus Seymour – I had three and a half sacks.”

What was the hardest part about performing in a football game?

“The hardest part for me is sitting out.”

If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be?

“I’d be LeBron James.”

What was your basketball routine before a big game started?

“Eat Subway and brush my teeth.”

Do you have a nickname or something a teammate called you during a game? 

“I have a few: Drago, Clifford and Karch.”

What is one thing that other teammates or coaches didn’t know about you?

“That one of my hobbies is to draw.”

Winning individual honors or a big team win?

“Big team win.”

What are your college aspirations?

“I’ll be attending the University of Iowa and majoring in education.”

What would your dream job be once you graduate?

“NFL player.”

What are your hobbies?

“Video games, swimming and fishing.”

What is your favorite event ever attended?

“Ohio State versus Iowa game in 2017-18 when Iowa got the upset win at Kinnick Stadium.”

What is your favorite type of music?

“Country and rap.”

What is your favorite thing to do on your phone? 

“Scroll through Twitter.”

What three words describe you?

“Funny, big, swag.”

Did you ever think about trying any other sports out?

“Yeah, I was thinking about doing track.”

“Recovering. We always had a lift on Saturday mornings.”

“I’m a night person for sure. I love staying up late and sleeping in.”

“Dogs. I have three of them.”
