Local ski club parents support dreams of junior races

LAKEWOOD – Close to 30 parents from the Ashwaubenon Nordic and Bay Nordic ski teams worked the Central Conference meet on the Lakewood Ski Trails Jan. 27.

Temperatures hovered around zero, but sunny skies and very light wind made the skate skiing slow, but more pleasant than expected.

For the starters, course marshals and finish line staffed by parents, the conference meet was a frigid weather adventure that proved the adage, “teamwork makes the dream work.” Ashwaubenon Nordic hosted, the McCauslin Brook Clubhouse offered a welcome respite from the elements and emergency medical services volunteer Fred Axelrod of Lakewood kept a close eye on the skiers.

Eight teams were represented with top skiers vying for a good seed position at the upcoming Wisconsin State Nordic Meet in February.

Wausau Nordic United took the first place team honors for both high school girls and boys. Wausau Night Gliders were the champions for both genders in the middle school competition.

Top local skiers included Ashwaubenon athletes Alex Lukens in second and Kevin Johnson in third in the high school boys’ contest.

Bay Nordic skier, Spirit Hess (Green Bay East), took fifth for high school girls.

Beckett Chambers (De Pere Middle School) was the middle school boys Central Conference champion and Raina Hess (Washington Middle School) was the girls’ champion.
