DE PERE – The De Pere High School wrestling team defeated West De Pere, 50-27, Nov. 29 in non-conference action at West De Pere High School.
Four forfeit wins by the Redbirds helped with the final margin of victory.
“We have a very young team and I thought it showed in stretches tonight,” said De Pere head coach Matt Kincade. “The four forfeits and 24 points that came with it obviously helped in the middle and latter stages.”
The Phantoms took an early 12-6 lead behind wins by Jake Hendricks and Alec Ukkola at 120 and 126 pounds, respectively.
“I challenged Jake to go out and get an opening victory with an arm-bar,” said West De Pere head coach Nick Winch. “He did exactly that. Some guys were wrestling up a weight class and that obviously put us at a disadvantage. I’m proud of the way the guys fought, though. “
The Redbirds then started their charge behind the wrestling of Sam Bruss.
Bruss gathered two takedowns and a near fall in the first two periods before pinning Trent Francois with 21 seconds left in the period.
After the Redbirds forged ahead, Tyler Mudd and Preston Ehlinger took to the mat at 152. West De Pere’s Mudd controlled the action for much of the first four minutes before Ehlinger reeled off nine straight points to win, 12-4.
“Preston really stood out tonight for us,” added Kincade. “To get the major decision with just a couple of seconds on the clock shows how he wrestled the entire six minutes.”
Perhaps the most entertaining match of the evening took place at 170 between De Pere’s Hayden Kincade and West De Pere’s Chance Green.
The match featured nine takedowns, four reversals, two escapes and a total of 28 points. Kincade eventually won with an 18-10 major decision.
“We need to compete and continue to get better once we hit our conference matches,” Matt Kincade said. “It’s a good start for our program.”
