Bay Port swims past Ashwaubenon in conference dual

SUAMICO – Hot off its win at the Fondy Invite last weekend, the Bay Port girls’ swimming team continues to impress.

The No. 9 ranked Pirates swam past Ashwaubenon 126-44 in a Fox River Classic Conference dual Oct. 2 at the Lineville Community Pool.

The junior varsity squad was also victorious on the night, beating the Jags 137-29.

“We had some great talent come in as freshmen this year,” said Bay Port head coach Jim Schilz. “The upperclassmen are doing an awesome job as far as directing them. We are in shape and changed a few technical things on some strokes, but now is the time to swim fast.”

The Pirates have won four FRCC titles in a row and are the odds-on favorite to make it five consecutive, but Schilz and the team aren’t taking anything for granted.

“The expectation is that we will swim to the best of our ability at the conference meet and beyond,” Schilz said. “The girls have put in a lot of hard work and I can’t hold them back. Other teams are looking at us to be right up there at sectionals. At state, I think a realistic goal as a team is a top-10 finish.”

The Pirates won 10 of 11 events against the Jags, led by Emma Lasecki, who was a double winner individually in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.73) and 100 freestyle (54.47).

Bay Port also won the 200 medley relay, 200-freestyle relay and the 400-freestyle relay.

The only winner on the evening for Ashwaubenon was Hallory Domnick in the 50 freestyle (26.06). Sydney Popp finished second in that race in a time of 26.70 for a one-two Jaguars finish.

“We have a very young team with only two varsity seniors,” said Ashwaubenon head coach Jennifer Steffel. “We lost nine seniors last year, but as the season has progressed this year, they have become more relaxed. Tonight we let the girls pick their events – we knew we couldn’t beat Bay Port, so rather than stress them out about that, we wanted them to not worry about it. For the conference meet, I think we can be a solid second depending on seeding and I’d expect us to have a good chance to win sectionals again. We’ve won those for the past four or five years.”
