FREEDOM-Randy Johnson and Sage Wagner each had top 10 finishes at the Freedom Cross Country Invitational held at Irish Waters golf course (Aug. 31).
“It was very warm and humid, and I like those conditions,” said Johnson. “I have a bit of a cold, though, and was trying to battle through. I feel like I got off to a fairly good start, but just couldn’t stay with the lead pack down the stretch.”
Johnson finished with a 17:08.26 to help propel the Jaguars to a sixth-place finish overall in the large division.
“I’m excited for conference to begin,” Johnson said. “I want to give my best effort each and every time in my final season at Ashwaubenon.”
Carson Polomis (Marinette) won the boys race with a 16:55.01
Wagner finished third overall with a time of 19:51.39.
Wagner stayed right with Anna Fauske of Kaukauna and Annie Higgins of Xavier through the first half of the race. The three of them had broken away from the rest of the runners.
“It’s a perfect course for me because there is not much elevation,” said Wagner. “There was a nice breeze and I surprised myself by the way I hung in there through much of the race.”
Even though Fauske showcased her closing speed that was too much for the rest of the field, Wagner has a lot to be proud of moving forward.
“Obviously you always want to win the race you compete in,” Wagner said. “However, I’m looking forward to the upcoming FRCC season competing with a great teammate in Erica Conrad, Sectionals, and then State. I can’t believe how fast these years have flown by.”
