MADISON – One of the most successful seasons in Bay Port boys’ swimming history has officially come to an end.

Coming into the WIAA D1 state meet last weekend in Madison, the Pirates had won 13 consecutive meets on their way to a third-straight Fox River Classic Conference title and a second consecutive sectional championship.

“We had a very successful season and built a lot of memories that will last a lifetime,” said Bay Port head coach Steve Jeffers. “We could not have won sectionals without each and every contributor. It was a fantastic group of guys who raised the bar for our future teams.”

Bay Port finished 16th overall out of 35 teams with its 44 points at state. Madison West won the title with a 293-point total.

“If we could have brought our entire team to Madison, we would have been top five,” Jeffers said. “With the extremely difficult D1 cuts (at sectionals) we weren’t able to carry our depth with us to state.”

The 200 Medley Relay team (Alec Jeffers, Peter Martin, Calvin Schilz and Griffin Hawley – 1:40:14) took home a 14th place, while the 200 Freestyle Relay team (Hawley, Wyatt Dvorak, Mitchell Meurer and Donovan – 1:29:53) and 400 Freestyle Relay team (Donovan, Dvorak, Jeffers and Schilz – 3:16:36) both placed 15th.

Individually, Aaron Donovan was 9th in the 500 Freestyle (4:46:67) and 19th in the 200 Freestyle (1:46:74); Hawley was 13th in the 50 Freestyle (21.70); Schilz placed 10th in the 200 IM (1:55:55) and 14th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:00:94); and Jeffers finished 10th in the 100 Backstroke (52:87).

“We had some great swims,” added Jeffers. “Griffin Hawley earned all-state honorable mention and set a school record in the 50 Free, while Aaron Donovan swam a near-perfect 500 Free. Alec Jeffers moved up the ladder with his 100 Backstroke performance and improved his own Bay Port school record. Calvin Schilz improved his own school record last week at sectionals and was also all-state honorable mention. Calvin had some very tough competition in the event at conference and sectionals.”
