Jaguars capture Cedarburg Swimming Sectional

By Murray Gleffe, Correspondent

CEDARBURG-The Ashwaubenon Jaguars got sent down to the northern suburbs of Milwaukee to partake in the WIAA Swimming Sectional (Feb. 10).

It didn’t matter as the Jaguars qualified seven individuals in 9 events for the State Tournament held next weekend in Madison.

The Jaguars also captured the team trophy by defeating Plymouth by 31 points.

Mark Teske captured the 100 Yard Freestyle Race over a hard-charging Zach Miller of Port Washington.

However, in the 200 Yard Freestyle Race, Teske swam away from his competition defeating the runner-up by over four seconds.

Joe Stone won gold as well capturing the 100 Yard Backstroke.

Stone will be appearing in his third straight State Tournament.

The 500 Yard Freestyle Race provided huge drama down the stretch.

Joe Steffel came into the race a full five seconds (seeded) behind Nick Starr of Grafton.

Steffel shook off the secondary time and swam an amazing 4:54.05 to edge out Starr by .85 of a second to win the event.

Kole Kolinski, Matt Farley, Nick Messamore, and Spencer Klika each qualified in a relay to swim at the Natatorium down in our State Capital.

Note: Division 2 WIAA Swim Meet will take place on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
