Jaguar hockey gets back to winning ways

ASHWAUBENON-The Ashwaubenon Jaguar hockey team snapped a three-game losing streak Thursday evening (Dec. 21) in defeating the Oshkosh Ice Hawks by a final of 6-1.

Liam Golden tallied two goals, and added one assist in the victory.

For the game, the Jaguars had a +34 advantage with shots on goal versus the Ice Hawks.

“I thought we played a complete game tonight,” said Matt Golden, Jaguar Hockey Coach. “We didn’t let our guard down like we did against Appleton United. We finished the game tonight.”

Miraculously, the Jaguars committed only 4 penalties for the entire game.

The Jaguar hockey team wanted to prove that they were still a program to be reckoned with in NE Wisconsin.

They did that and more.

Just 3:50 into the game, Golden intercepted a pass that was intended for Logan Ueker of the Ice Hawks and went in and stuffed home the first goal of the evening for the Jaguars.

“Liam has the capabilities to take over a game if he can control his emotions,” added Golden. “Tyler (Roethlisberger) laced a beautiful puck to him on that second goal. It was awesome team work and that’s what we need moving forward from our entire squad.”

It was the first of a plethora of shots on Ice Hawk goaltender Tyler Baumann.

Later in the period, Roethlisberger cut up the middle and Andre Stewart delivered a ‘spot on’ pass that Roethlisberger put home to give the Jaguars a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Up to that point, the Jaguars had an 11-shot advantage on the Ice Hawks, but to the trained eye it seemed much more than that!

Things went from bad to worse in the middle period for the visiting team.

The Jaguars tacked on two more even strength goals, and had three more hit the pipe.

Jaguar Goaltender Timothy Svetlichnyy was challenged only five times through the first 34 minutes and Coach Golden went with Matt Piontkowski for the final period.

The Ice Hawks came out with an extra step in their stride to start the last period.

They scored just 2:39 in and cut the margin to 4-1.

However, the Jaguars skating and overall athletic ability was just too much for the Ice Hawks to handle.

The Jaguars tacked on two additional goals (the former a breakaway by Golden, the latter a wrister by Dorn) to go onto a five-goal win.

“We have some momentum back, and I hope we carry that over to Saturday’s conference game and then our trip to Menomonie,” said Golden.

The Jaguars raise their overall mark to 6-4 on the season and will host the Notre Dame Academy Tritons on Dec. 23.
