Wisconsin has a rich tradition of progressive milestones, but none may be as important as what happened on June 10, 1919.

On that date, Wisconsin was the first state to ratify the 19th Amendment to give women the right to vote.

It took until Aug. 18, 1920, for it to be ratified by the 36 required states in order for it to become a Constitutional Amendment.

That’s right, Wisconsin was the pioneer in the women’s suffrage movement.

In this issue of The Press Times, you will find an insert that highlights the Women’s History Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Hill State Park.

This event is a mixture of historical organizations discussing Wisconsin women throughout history who made a difference in their communities, as well as modern organizations of which girls and women may become a part.

One of the most important women to have lived in Green Bay was Elizabeth Baird.

What she lived through, how she bettered the community and herself and some of her exploits paint of picture of the community in the 1800s.

The Women’s History Celebration is a great opportunity to learn about Baird and five other pioneer women whose impact on the community was truly historic.

If you are more interested in women who currently shape the community, there will be a panel discussion with female leaders who are influencers in the area.

These women include: Bridget Krage O’Connor, Hope Schaefer, Amanda Haberlein and Dr. Elizabeth O’Connor.

A second discussion will feature Cheri Larson, Diane Gustin, Sandee Sims, Jill Verhaagh and Andrea Falasco.

If you just want to play some games or do some activities, the Women’s History Celebration has that covered as well.

We encourage the public to come out and help inspire girls to make a difference in their communities by learning about women who have made a difference in the past and those who are doing so now and into the future.
