Winners named in spring election

BROWN COUNTY - The April 6 spring general election is over and winners have been declared in a bevy of races including village and school boards, referendums, a special election for the 89th Assembly District and more. 

In the 89th Assembly District special election, Republican Elijah Behnke outpolled Democrat Karl Jaeger, 2,631 votes to 1,589 in Brown County. 

Across the district, Behnke received 8,129 votes to Jaeger’s 4,732.

Municipal races 

In District 1 in De Pere, incumbent Alderperson Amy Chandik Kundinger defeated challenger  Nathan Cummings,1,017 votes to 374. 

In District 2 in De Pere, incumbent Jonathon Hansen outpolled Susan Netzel, 699 votes to 575. 

Bellevue village president Steve Soukup won another three-year term after he defeated challenger Jackie Krull, 1,503 votes to 849. 

In Ashwaubenon, Trustee Tracy Flucke won a three-year term to the village board in Wards 11-12 after defeating former Ward 7-8 Trustee Mark Williams 273 to 210. 

Suamico trustees Dan Roddan and Michelle Eckert both won new three-year terms with Roddan earning the most votes, 1,879, followed by Eckert with 1,699, and challenger Nick Bonafilia with 1,190. 

Howard voters re-elected their municipal judge for a four-year term with Brian Stevens defeating Cathy Frey Hughes, 1,718 to 1,586. 

School board results 

Voters in the Howard-Suamico School District re-elected one school board member for a three-year term and replaced another in a four-way race for two seats. 

Incumbent Vanessa Moran was the top vote-getter at 3,711, while challenger Greg Klimek tallied 3,220 votes to join the board. They both outpolled challenger Travis Veraghen, 2,674 votes, and incumbent Jeff Eilers, 1,605 votes. 

Green Bay Area Public School District voters also re-elected one school board member for a three-year term and replaced another in a four-way race for two seats.

Challenger Nancy Welch, a retired school teacher tallied the most votes at 8,774, while longtime incumbent Andrew Becker received 7,636 votes to remain on the board.

Challenger Bryan Milz fell less than 600 votes short of winning a board seat at 7,066, while incumbents Rhonda Sitnikau received 6,509 votes in her unsuccessful re-election bid. 

The De Pere school board race featured a close contest with no one receiving more than 28 percent of the vote, as four candidates ran for two seats with both incumbents being re-elected to new three-year terms.

Dan Van Straten received the most votes at 2,555, followed by Jeff Mirkes with 2,431 votes.

Angela Hoisington placed third with 2,259 votes, while Chad Jeskewitz finished fourth with 2,252 votes. 

Running for an open seat on the West De Pere school board, Ryan Van Den Huevel outpolled Jamie Kinjerski, 1,756 votes to 1,454, to win a three-year term. 

Ashwaubenon school board president Jay Van Laanen retained his seat for another three-year term, defeating Heidi Murphy, 1,291 to 784. 

On the Pulaski school board, Megan Mills-Koehler won an open at-large seat after defeating Dan Nowak, 1,807 to 1,623. 

Also in Pulaski, incumbent Jeromy Delebreau outpolled Jaclyn Fradette, 1,732 to 1,644. 

Running for an open seat on the Seymour school board, Beth Schmalz defeated Jenny McCollian, 897 to 657. 

Referendum results 

Both referendum questions on the ballot for the Howard-Suamico School District passed Tuesday, April 6.

The first question, an operational levy override of $5 million a year from 2023-24 to 2027-28 passed 3,656 to 3,356. 

The second question, authorizing the board to take on $98 million in debt for facilities improvements, passed 3,784 to 3,232.

Seymour school district voters, by a margin of 1,372 to 571, approved a $6.5-million referendum to make improvements at the middle and high schools.

Circuit court results 

In the one contested race in Brown County Circuit Court Branch 4, 19-year incumbent Kendall Kelley outpolled Rachel Maes, an assistant Green Bay city attorney, 21,400 to 15,467.
