Vang throws for three touchdowns as Jaguars defeat Tritons

GREEN BAY—Cadian Vang threw for three touchdowns and Connor Ramage rushed for two as Ashwaubenon defeated Notre Dame 34-13 in a Fox River Classic Conference game Sept.27 at Ted Fritsch Field.

Vang completed 16 of 21 passes for 192 yards and Ramage rushed 24 times for 155 yards.

Backup tailback Will Zellner led the Tritons with 109 yards on eight carries and one touchdown, while James Arett added 107 yards on 17 carries and a score.

“It’s about the journey with these guys through six games and winning every single one of them so far,” said Brian Ryczkowski, Ashwaubenon head coach. “We didn’t want to pass as much as we did, but they stacked the box and manned up on us.”

The Jaguars (6-0) started the game on offense.

16 plays, 75 yards and 8:07 later, Marty Kiernan danced into the end zone from a perfectly thrown ball by Vang to put Ashwaubenon up 7-0 with 3:53 left in the first quarter.

After a quick three and out by Notre Dame, the Tritons received a break after a special teams’ blunder by Ashwaubenon put them inside the Jaguars 45-yard line early in the second quarter.

Seven plays later, the Tritons were knocking on the doorstep facing a 4th and 3 from the Jaguars' 3.

Quarterback Hogan Anderson handed off to Arett up the middle, but he was stuffed by the stout Ashwaubenon defensive line, shifting the momentum. 

“We gave up a good chunk of yardage on that drive, but our guys came up big when we needed to keep them out of the end zone,” added Ryczkowski.

The Jaguars didn’t score on their next possession but before half after a Tritons (1-5) short punt, Ashwaubenon went up two touchdowns when Ramage barreled in from 8 yards out.

The Jags carried the momentum into the third quarter as Ramage added his second touchdown of the evening - this time from 28 yards out on the ground for a 21-0 lead. 

With a little more than 100 yards of total offense, the Tritons got a shot in the arm late in the third quarter when Zellner took a handoff and scampered 67 yards down the right sidelines to cut the Jaguars' lead to 21-7.

“Will is a gamer, and we don’t have to question when he comes in for James that he’ll get positive yardage,” said Mike Rader, Notre Dame head coach. “He’s a natural runner who has provided us with a couple of big touchdown runs the last two weeks.”

In the fourth quarter, Jaguars wide receiver Luke Schroeder (son of former Packers player Bill Schroeder) made touchdown catches of 28 and 40 yards on back-to-back possessions to put Ashwaubenon up 34-7 with just 5:28 left.

The Tritons added a late touchdown to provide the final margin.

“Cadian made some plays today with his feet,” Ryczkowski said. “He got flushed multiple times. He has been making better decisions from week-to-week. We’ll get back after it at practice, have our Thursday team meal and keep preparing for Bay Port next Friday.”
