ASHWAUBENON – Brody Schurk who will soon turn 5 was not feeling well last year.

Doctors were unable to determine what was wrong with him for months and then found a 12 centimeter mass on his kidney.

Brody, 5, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor, Wilm’s Tumor, in October of 2017.

Brody is the son of Katie and Michael Schurk. Katie is the co-host on the Murphy in the Morning show on WIXX radio.

Brody had his kidney removed last October because of the tumor.

The cancer was in stage four.

After his tumor was removed at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee and 11 treatments, his cancer is now in stage two.

Thrive Nutrition and Fitness on Willard in Ashwaubenon held a fundraiser for Brody on Saturday, Feb. 10.

Barb Murphy owner of Thrive Nutrition and Fitness along with her daughter Kali Murphy, and the rest of the wellness coaches Dani Mason, Shelly Wolf, Krystal Chupko, Courtney Makowski, Cassi Pieschek, and Barb Schuette helped coordinate and work the event.

Murphy’s family also helped with the event with grandma/great grandma Barb Drzewiecki selling her family’s favorite and famous Mama D’s cookies and Drzewiecki’s children Bob, and Murphy helping prepare booyah for sale and daughters Debbie and Mary Jo helping the day of the event.

The fundraiser for Brody is to help with his medical costs for the cancer treatments.

“Barb Murphy, Ashwaubenon and the greater Green Bay community have been overwhelming with their donations and people responding. It is very much appreciated.” said Katie, Brody’s mom.

“One of our goals for Thrive Nutrition and Fitness is to give back to the community. A fundraiser for Brody was chosen because of what his mother does for the community,” said Murphy.

Schurk shows up and volunteers at many community events. Some of what she does is promote community projects, emcee events, show up at races, and volunteer at school events all for free.

There was also a bucket raffle ticket.

Each ticket was valid for a free shake and an entry to win one of the raffle prizes.

In addition to the fundraising, Makowski who works at Thrive and is a student at St. Norbert College had her sorority promote the day with Pamper the Queen where children could come and be a queen for the day.

Brody completed 11 of his 13 chemotherapy treatments.

The day was not only a fundraiser, but a celebration of how strong Brody is and his will to kick cancer.

Any donations for Brody can be dropped off at thrive Nutrition and Fitness 844 Willard Drive or people can call 920-593-2777.
