DE PERE – In a 65-45 rout of Shawano Dec. 22, West De Pere basketball player Alexa Thomson scored her 1,000th career point.

In addition to her 22 points that game, the 5-foot-8 senior pulled down seven rebounds and was 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.

“The moment was meaningful to me,” said Thomson, who’s averaging more than 16 points per game (ppg). “All my hard work has paid off. My teammates made sure I got the ball – maybe a bit too much – all night. They came running onto the floor, so it was nice to share the moment with them.”

Thomson, whose career high is 30 points during a game last season, has been a member of the Phantoms varsity squad since her freshman year.

During her freshman season, she averaged almost 8 ppg, while upping that total to 11.8 her sophomore year.

Last season, she scored at a 16.9-ppg clip.

Thomson has also grabbed 603 career rebounds, averaging almost 8 per contest during her 77 games wearing a West De Pere uniform.

“It was a goal of mine (to score 1,000 points),” she said. “With COVID-19 this year, I’m grateful the school district is allowing us to play. If we had games canceled or didn’t play, it would have affected me reaching my goal. I feel lucky to be playing, but I feel bad for all the schools not playing. If I wasn’t playing basketball this winter, I’m not sure what I’d be doing.”

Players have to wear masks during practices and games, but Thomson said it’s worth it.

“If it helps us play, we’d do anything,” she said. “Some games it’s easier (to wear a mask) than others.”

The Phantoms are off to a hot start at 8-3.

“It’s going well,” said Thomson. “We’ve had a couple of tough losses, but we’ve gotten past them. We know we can beat these teams, so we have to give it our all.”

She’s planning to play college basketball at Division III University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

“Point seemed like the best fit for me,” said Thomson, who will study biology. “I connected well with the coaches, and we began talking last year. I went to a game last season as well.”

Thomson also considered UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse.
