As the first round of the playoffs began West De Pere faced off against Oshkosh North. Although the Phantoms fell down two touchdowns in the first half, they came back to win the game 60-34.
This game was predicted to be a blowout for West, but as the game started Oshkosh had different plans. Oshkosh North started the game with two back-to-back touchdowns, putting West Pere down by 14. Even though West was slow to start, they weren’t going down without a fight. “We had to make some adjustments… We had to play our game” said West De Pere Head Coach Chris Greisen. Soon the Phantoms made the score 29-21 before halftime.
As West De Pere gained their momentum there was no slowing them down. They came back after halftime with a different mentality. “The change was in the attitude, we knew it wasn’t our time to stop playing football,” said West De Pere’s BJ Griffin. After receiving the ball after halftime, West continued to take advantage of this momentum. Scoring touchdown after touchdown.
After West created a three-touchdown lead, Oshkosh North wanted to make their way back into the game. So they also began to make adjustments, which seemed to work. Oshkosh began to force turnovers and score the ball, putting the game back into a one-score game. This was a very close and unexpected turnaround from Oshkosh.
But soon after, West De Pere caused two turnovers and scored on almost every drive. “This just shows how classy our team is… this shows how good our program is.” said Judea Kniskern.
This game was put away with a final score of 60-34, allowing West De Pere to move on to the second round of Playoffs to face Sun Prairie East.
