GREEN BAY – Roses, hats and wine – oh my!

An upcoming wine-tasting event is bringing some Kentucky Derby fun to downtown Green Bay.

“This is a great way for folks to see what the Broadway District has to offer,” said Allie Thut, Director of Special Events for On Broadway, Inc. “You might end up inside a restaurant or shop that you’ve never been to before. We hope the next time you have a gift to buy or want to go out to eat, you’ll come back to one of the establishments you visited along your route during this wine walk.”

The Run for the Roses Wine Walk (formerly the Wildflower Wine Walk), presented by Unison Credit Union, is set for 1-5 p.m. May 7 in the Broadway District.

The event features wine sampling from a handful of local wineries including Duck Creek, Mona Rose, Lautenbach and Captain’s Walk, at more than a dozen local businesses as attendees meander between different shops, restaurants and other district venues.

Food pairings at select locations that complement the wine selections will also be available.

“With this event we want to support the local brands and wineries,” Thut said. “Each winery provides a couple types of wines, along with a tech sheet highlighting significant features of that specific wine.”

Derby viewing party

Since the wine walk falls on the same day as the Kentucky Derby, she said it has been themed accordingly, with walk attendees encouraged to dress up and accessorize with a big hat.

“The Derby is a symbol of springing forward into summer,” Alicia Stiles, general manager with The Depot, said. “With budding trees and flowers in bloom, the Kentucky Derby has always been an occasion to wear your springtime outfit that feels as though it is just a little over the top, for that everyday event.”

Stiles said the event also features an added opportunity to show off that special outfit and dive a little deeper into the Kentucky Derby at a VIP Derby viewing party at The Depot from 4-7 p.m.

“Come to The Depot for the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together after the wine walk to show off their outfits while they get a little taste of derby right here at home,” she said.

The main race for the Kentucky Derby starts at 4:45 p.m.

“The Depot will be offering hibiscus mint lemonade, a classic mint julep, pimento cheese deviled eggs, Benedict teen spread, ham biscuit sandwiches with apricot mustard, fried green tomatoes, and mint julep cake for the sweet tooth” said Stiles.

The best dressed contest will be judged during the viewing party.

Categories include best hat, best group outfits and best individual outfit.

“We will all be dressed in our Kentucky Derby digs and excited to hang out with you and have fun watching the race,” Stiles said. “If you are excited to kick off summer with a fun community event, be sure and add your VIP ticket to your Run for the Roses Wine Walk ticket purchase.”
