St. John’s Ministries opens shelters

GREEN BAY — The 2024-25 shelter season will open at St. John’s Ministries on Friday, Nov. 1, with both the men’s and women’s shelters opening for adults seeking shelter.

“St. John’s Ministries will continue to provide shelter services to adult men and women in our community,” St. John’s Executive Director Jesse Brunette said. “We need to begin the season with both shelters to live out our mission of honoring the dignity of those experiencing homelessness in our community. We are facing similar staff shortages to last year and that many organizations and businesses in our community are facing. However, different than last year, we plan to embrace the challenge and better serve all our neighbors seeking shelter.”

St. John’s Ministries has of 35 shifts unfilled, and they are seeking 10-12 “dedicated and mission-driven” individuals willing to work one to two shifts each week.

“Our hearts break for the men and women in the community who need shelter,” Brunette continued. “They face trauma and abuse in their lives, and St. John’s Ministries will provide shelter services, love and resources to move forward.”

Last year, St. John’s Ministries supported a record 662 individuals — 440 men and 222 women — with shelter services, warmth and a meal during the harsh winter months.

Director of Shelter Operations Joe Wilmet said he is eager to open the shelters for the season and provide safe space for men and women.

“I love what we do. I love the people we serve, and I find joy in working alongside likeminded individuals that join our team at St. John’s Ministries,” Wilmet said. “When someone spends their evenings, weekends or mornings with us, it is clear they are there for reasons other than collecting a paycheck. Shelter staff often return season after season because they also share a passion for serving their brothers and sisters in need. The shelter staff we have is outstanding and have a heart to serve. They are one of the key reasons we can operate as we do.”

Shelter shifts include support and security positions open for anyone over the age of 18.
