On Wednesday, April 9, St. Norbert College Theater will perform Right to be Forgotten by Sharyn Rothstein.
The contemplative yet comedic performance will be free entry and held at the Webb Theater in Abbot Penning’s Hall of Fine Arts on the Saint Norbert College campus.
“The topic is so interesting because it has to do with privacy on the internet, and who gets to call the shots on what gets to stay there [on the internet] or not, even if it’s not true”, said Show Director and Professor of Theatre Studies Stephen Rupsch.
The show’s storyline follows a man who, in his teen years, made a big mistake that tainted his online and in-person reputation.
This has led him to struggle with maintaining stable relationships, jobs and more.
Frustrated with the mistake that haunts him online and the false rumors that coincide, he embarks on a journey to clear his name.
The plot will provide audience members with some real-life ethical dilemmas, and questions that demand an answer to the ever-changing fast-paced reality of the internet.
“I hope this leaves audience members questioning their rights, about their personal rights, and what they are putting on social media,” said Rupsch. “The internet still feels like the wild west, it’s very lawless, how can we use it in a healthy way?”
Contributors to making this show come to life included only twelve Saint Norbert College students, alongside Rupsch, and Associate Professor of Theatre and Director of Theatre Studies April Beiswenger.
Since the start of the Spring semester at SNC, actors have been rehearsing for the show about five days a week, on top of their studies.
Rupsch warns, “There will be adult language and themes, it’s not for little kids.”
The show plans to run for a consecutive 92 minutes with no intermission.
