Setting the sights on a safe hunting season

Brown County Rifle Range open daily ahead of deer hunt

Posted

SUAMICO – The Brown County Rifle Range, located at 2227 Brown Rd. in Suamico, will be open daily this month for hunters and shooting sport enthusiasts alike leading up to the traditional nine-day gun deer season.

“This is the time of year when everybody’s getting excited,” said Brown County Parks Assistant Naturalist Logan Lasee. “The weather’s getting a little cold, deer activity is going up and everybody’s getting ready to go out for that gun deer hunt.”

Staff will be on site at the range and able to provide assistance to patrons in zeroing their firearms, ensuring a safe and ethical hunting season.

“The county’s Rifle Range provides a service to the hunters,” said Natural Resource Manager Jason Petrella. “By assisting hunters with making accurate shots, we are assisting with the ethical harvest of deer while hunters are in the fields and forest.”

Even County Executive Troy Streckenbach was at the range this week sighting his gun for the upcoming season.

“I just had an opportunity to sight my gun — at 50 yards I’m perfect but at 100 yards I’ve got a little work to do…” he said. “But that’s why I came out here… is to really make sure that I have that sight lined up… This opportunity right before the deer hunt is to be able to make sure that you have first and foremost safety and second, an ethical hunt.”

And the range isn’t only for deer hunters — community members are invited to enjoy target practice and other types of hunting at the facility.

The Rifle Range includes 10 shooting lanes with targets at 25, 50 and 100 yards with an ADA accessible shooting stand and targets and hearing protection provided.

The Rifle Range also has lanes for archery and crossbow users.

The range will be open daily through Nov. 20 between 8:00 a.m.-3:45 p.m.
