‘Proyecto Iluminador’ to illuminate 20 Hispanic and Latino stories in Northeast Wisconsin

The Illuminating Project, in partnership with photographer Nichole Garcia of Squid Photography and One of One Gallery owner Abimael de Jesus, will unveil Proyecto Iluminador, a community exhibit celebrating 20 inspiring Hispanic individuals — 10 women and 10 men — living in or near Green Bay, De Pere and the broader Northeast Wisconsin area.

The exhibit will open with a public grand opening reception on Sept. 18 at One of One Gallery, 365 Main Ave., De Pere, and will remain on display for the duration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Proyecto Iluminador” extends the Illuminating Project’s signature model of shining a light on the individuals who quietly strengthen a community’s fabric. Each of the 20 participants will be featured with a high-quality framed professional portrait alongside a compelling biography highlighting their personal story and their contributions to the local community, state, and country.

Wisconsin’s Hispanic and Latino population continues to grow and contribute significantly to the state’s economy, workforce, education, and culture. In Brown County alone, the community makes up approximately 10.8% of the population — more than 27,000 people. Proyecto Iluminador aims to give visibility and celebration to the everyday heroes within that community whose stories have historically gone untold in Northeast Wisconsin.

“Wisconsin’s Hispanic community continues to grow and contribute so much to our local economy, workforce, education, and culture. In Brown County alone, that’s over 27,000 people, everyday heroes who haven’t always had a stage. Proyecto Iluminador is about giving them one, with the dignity and celebration they deserve,” said Juliane Troicki, Ph.D., founder of the Illuminating Project.

“Passion is synonymous with Hispanic heritage. We pour it into everything we do, whether it’s cooking a meal for our family or performing life-saving surgery. These moments deserve to be celebrated and it’s an honor to help bring them into the light,” said Nichole Garcia, photographer and co-organizer of the exhibit.
