GREEN BAY – On Tuesday, April 15, the Green Bay Preble Hornets battled against the Green Bay East Red Devils as the Hornets swarmed and stormed with a final score of 2-0.
The game began with kickoff from the Preble Hornets, who immediately flew to the goal and maintained possession on their end of the field for the first five minutes of the game.
The Hornets continued to sting as they had two shots by the 12 minute mark, and their first goal scored by junior Olivia Wiernasz 16 minutes into the game.
“I think [the goal] set the tone for the team that we can actually finish, we can do this, we just need to keep trying,” explains Wiernasz. “We knew that this was our game and that we should have been winning by more in the first half. We came into the game knowing we wanted to win, so we just kept that going.”
By the end of the first half, the Hornets managed to take 12 shots, 9 of which were saved by Red Devils keeper junior Jamaya Mariner, while the Red Devils managed to sneak in one shot which was saved by Preble keeper sophomore Sayde Ha.
As the second half began, off of kickoff the Hornets stole the ball from the Red Devils, taking another shot on goal within the first 10 seconds.
The teams continued to fight as they each battled for shots, until finally the Hornets successfully added another goal to the score as sophomore Samantha Thompson ripped the ball into the goal 21 minutes into the second half.
The game concluded with a final score of 2-0 and the Preble Hornets ending with a final total of 18 shots.
“They battled us very tough, [they had a] great goalie who kept the game close,” explained Justin Callan, Preble Varsity Head Coach. “[We're going to] keep playing team ball, keep building, [and] counting on eachother. Early season we’ve had four starters hurt today, so a lot of people having to step up is only going to help us in the long run…We’re battling through a lot of injuries right now, but we’re playing well as a team”
Red Devils keeper Mariner ended with a total of 14 incredible saves on the night, stopping the Hornets from their advances and maintaining a tight score.
“I think it was a really good game,” says Wiernasz. “I think we started off pretty slow but we got into the motion of it and we started to dominate”
As the Hornet prepare for their upcoming conference journey, Coach Callan explained that they are ready for the competition.
“We’re very excited for conference [games],” said Collan. “This is why we set up so many games for this part of the season, to prepare us for conference. We’re a very confident team and are ready to play against anyone.”
Junior Captain Wiernasz explains similar excitement as she states, “Coach always tells us that our goal this season is to win conference, and that’s going to become a reality to us if we just keep trying.”
The Green Bay East Red Devils will continue their conference competition away against Seymour on Thursday, April 17, while the Green Bay Preble Hornets will begin their conference fight away against Green Bay Southwest on Tuesday, April 22.
