Pirates upset Tritons

Posted

GREEN BAY – On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the No. 3 Bay Port Pirates (17-7 overall, 13-5 conf.) defeated the No. 2 Notre Dame Academy Tritons (14-6 overall, 13-3 conf.) in a close battle of 59-52 in a Fox River Classic Conference showdown.

Top scorers for Bay Port highlight freshman Kailynn Thompson, who pulled in 13 points for the team, as well as junior Melia Lemorande who earned a total of 20 points to help her team to victory.

The Tritons gave the Pirates a run for their money as they took the lead throughout the first half of the game, ending the half with a score of 29-26 for the Tritons.

Tom Simcik, one of the Bay Port assistant coaches, explained how the girls were able to take the lead and fight their way to victory.

“I think Olivia, number 11, had a big steal, went in for a layup and that kind of changed the momentum. We came back and hit a couple threes, and it just kept us going and we got the lead and never looked back,” Simcik said. “I think it was a great win for our program…You know, there’s always going to be that peak and valley that Notre Dame was going to make a run, but everytime they made a shot, we made a shot and we just didn’t give up and our defense did a wonderful great job.”

Thompson shared similar feelings as she explained her feelings about the second half as well as the team’s victory.

“We were told to come out with lots of energy, and that's what we did,” said Thompson. “I just feel really happy to win with my team..it feels awesome, and I feel really energetic right now.”

With this latest victory, the Pirates have finished their regular conference season and are preparing to move into post-season playoffs.

“Now it’s tournament time, we’re [17-7], a good way to finish…it’s one game at a time the rest of the way,” said Simcik.
