HOWARD – On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the No. 3 Bay Port Pirates (15-7 overall, 11-5 conf.) defeated the No. 4 Preble Hornets (11-8 overall, 8-5 conf.) as they won 67-54 in a Fox River Classic Conference showdown.
Top scorers for Bay Port spotlight freshman Kailynn Thompson with 11 points, freshman Madeline Lewitzke with 13 points and junior Melia Lemorande with a huge total of 34 points.
Out of the 34 points Melia Lemorande banked throughout the game, 18 of the points were earned through her total of six three-point-shots on the night.
“It felt amazing. I’ve been in a rut recently and that was the first game that I kind of got my groove back, so it really meant a lot to be out there with my team,” said Melia. “We really came out there with a good defensive focus and I think we got through with that, and we came out with the idea to get no fouls, to move our feet, do good off screens, and I think we really accomplished that well as a team.”
The Pirates ended the first half ahead with a score of 36-25 but going into the second half, the Hornets fought back.
“They started fighting back and we just stayed disciplined on our offensive sets, ran some good stuff, we were shooting the ball well tonight so that helped,” said Bay Port Head Coach Adam Lemorande. “I thought it was a great game. We finally competed, the girls showed up, it was just a good all around game.”
Melia explained that going into the second half, maintaining the motivation within the team was vital for the game’s success.
“A lot of it is vocal, especially the bench. Staying vocal and cheering for our teammates, and coming at each play getting the same intensity over and over is how we keep the same energy,” said Melia.
The Pirates will continue their fight this Friday, Feb. 14, where they will take on the Sheboygan South Redwings, while the Hornets will be away on Friday as they face the De Pere Redbirds.
