FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Green Bay women's basketball came up short in a 66-67 loss to Purdue Fort Wayne on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Phoenix (6-4, 1-1 HL) was led by a great performance from Jasmine Kondrakiewicz, who scored a season-high 20 points, just one shy of tying her career-high. She paired that with a season-high 13 rebounds, also one shy of her career-high. Her double-double was the second of the season and seventh of her career.
PFW (5-5, 2-0 HL) got a game-high 25 points from Lauren Ross. Green Bay won't see Purdue Fort Wayne until the regular season finale on March 1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For much of the opening quarter, neither team led by as much as four. Jordan Reid knocked down a mid-range shot that gave PFW a 22-14 lead with 2:07 remaining in the first frame, but a pair of free throws from Kondrakiewicz and a layup from Miah Meyer helped cut the deficit to 18-22 going into the second quarter. The Mastodons twice again held an eight-point advantage during the next stanza, but the Phoenix responded with a three from Cassie Schiltz the first time before 'Jas' made a layup late in the half, pulling Green Bay back to within five at 31-36 at the break.
Sydney Freeman helped the Mastodons excel out of the locker room, ballooning PFW's lead to 52-39 with 5:51 left in the third period. Green Bay crept back into the contest, getting buckets from Kondrakiewicz, Bailey Butler, and Maren Westin to pull within two at 51-53 entering the final 10 minutes. Maddy Schreiber scored the first five points of the period for UW-Green Bay, helping the Phoenix grab a 56-55 lead with 6:36 remaining in regulation. Purdue Fort Wayne answered back with a quick 5-0 run to reclaim a 60-56 advantage. The Phoenix kept the game within five points for the entire period but could never get over the hump, falling 66-67.
