Lydia Schaible recently completed her senior season with the Ashwaubenon girls’ basketball team.
She was named second-team in the Fox River Classic Conference and will attend Michigan Tech University in Houghton, Michigan, to play basketball and study biology.
Schaible also plays soccer.
What’s it like to be a senior leader at Ashwaubenon?
“Like everything worthwhile in life, it’s challenging. However, it’s fun, and I love all my teammates.”
Talk about signing with Michigan Tech.
“It’s been a dream of mine to play college basketball. Michigan Tech is the perfect fit for me academically and athletically – it felt great to make it official.”
What’s your most embarrassing sports moment?
“During my sophomore season, I got a steal and passed the ball up court during a fast break. I then proceeded to trip over my own feet and face plant.”
Who on the soccer team are you closest to?
“Norah Kinsman and Erica Conrad. We have played on various teams since elementary school and varsity since our freshman year. The two of them have become my best friends outside of soccer, too.”
What was your favorite thing about playing basketball for Nicky VanLaanen?
“Coach has an enormous passion for the game, and that rubbed off on the entire team. She does a great job of keeping the high school players involved with the Ashwaubenon youth to build the program.”
Do you like the four seasons we have in Green Bay?
“I enjoy the diversity of the seasons. I especially love winter and the snow.”
Talk about a volunteer experience where you helped someone.
“I went to a local school and taught basketball and soccer to the summer camp kids for two years. The participants were students with cognitive disabilities, and it was one of the most fulfilling opportunities I’ve ever had.”
If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be?
“The Pope.”
Who’s your role model?
“My dad – he’s the hardest working person I know, and he knows the right things to say at the right time.”
What’s one thing most people don't know about you?
“I’m a picky eater.”
Favorite gift received and given?
“I gave both of my sisters Michigan Tech gear because they are excited to visit and cheer me on in the future. They have given me sweatshirts from the colleges they have attended.”
What’s your dream job?
“I would love to be a family physician.”
Who was the funniest person on your basketball team?
“Sam Holford. She always made me laugh and had amazing stories to share with the team.”
Talk about the differences between basketball and soccer.
“They take a different type of cardio. I find basketball to be more physical.”
What are your hobbies?
“Playing basketball, baking, shopping, camping at Rock Island and spending time with my family and friends.”
Who’s your favorite singer?
“John Mayer.”
What two words describe you?
“Gritty, witty.”
What’s your favorite trip ever taken?
“Last spring break when my dad and I traveled much of the East Coast together.”
What’s your favorite college basketball team?
“The University of Michigan.”
