Luke Hansford is a senior second baseman on the Ashwaubenon baseball team.
The Jaguars have opened up the 2019 season by winning three of their first five FRCC games.
Hansford is the second hitter in a rotation that has averaged over four runs a game in the early going.
He lists the ESPN app as being his favorite to check scores of different sports and tries to get to as many Milwaukee Brewers games as possible during the 162-game season.
Your team went through a tough FRCC season last year with injuries. However, you rebounded to go to state in Legion baseball. Talk about that experience in Baraboo.
“The experience was amazing. Our team really came together before the state run, which was the reason I think that we got the chance to play at such a cool place.”
What teammates would you take to see an MLB playoff game with?
“I would want to go with the whole team. I am big on the team concept.”
Talk about playing at Ashwaubomay Park up against the Fox River and the huge Jaguars’ banner that spans the home-run wall.
“Playing next to the Fox River is always a treat. The wind is always blowing in, so that is no fun; however, I think we have a very cool place to play baseball, and the banner shows great team pride.”
What is your most embarrassing baseball moment?
“When I dove and fielded a grounder and tried to throw from one knee. I overthrew the first baseman and the ball went in the other team's dugout.”
Who is the most likely to be early/late to practice?
“Ian (MacLean) is definitely more likely to show up early, and Marty (Kiernan) is likely to be the late one.”
What's the hardest part about performing at your position?
“Reacting to the ball if there is going to be a bad hop or if I have to run down a pop up in foul territory.”
If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be?
“I would want to be Donald Trump. Leadership is something I like to strive for.”
What are your goals for the 2019 season?
“To accumulate double-digit wins in the column, and for me to do the best I can to make that happen.”
Talk about your sister Lily and the competitiveness growing up in your household around sports.
“My sister and I have always supported each other. There is really no competitiveness unless we are playing one-on-one in something. She is great in her own right.”
Do you have a nickname or something a teammate calls you during a game?
“My nickname is Pookas.”
What are your college aspirations?
“I plan to attend Marquette University majoring in business or engineering.”
What are your hobbies?
“I like to fish, play video games and hang out with friends.”
What three words describe you?
“Funny, outgoing, competitive.”
College World Series or an MLB game?
“MLB game.”
Who is your favorite baseball player, team and why?
“Francisco Lindor because I love how he can do it all at such a high level. My favorite baseball team is the Milwaukee Brewers. They are my home state team, and I love going to their games.”
A triple or an amazing diving catch?
“Triple.”
What are three things you're going to miss about attending Ashwaubenon High School?
“Seeing all my high school friends, some of the teachers and playing sports.”
Malibu for surfing or the Rocky Mountains for climbing?
“Malibu for surfing.”
